Why is the gtx260 as expensive as the gtx460? And which of the two performs best?

I always assumed the gtx460 was better, which it probably is, but why is it cheaper? The gtx280 (which I also think delivers less performance than the 460) is still massively expensive.

Why are GPU prices so random? Shouldn't they be more or less scaled to reflect the performance of the card?

I originally planned on upgrading my 8800GTS 640mb to the gtx260, but when I saw that the gtx460 cost less, I started to wonder.|||They're random because of compatibility differences and release time. New, boxed, computer components don't tend to decrease much in price even when a much better version is released.

The GTX460 is definitely faster than the GTX260.|||Well look at it this way the the 260 was all the rage (and as an entry level hi end card) it still is! just like when you bought your 8800GTS it was the hottest thing out there. the 460 is newer and yes its faster than the 260 it has DDR5 ram and more of it, higher bandwidth, cooler running...etc but why drop a price if the 260 still sells? You can still buy your 8800 card brand new!|||The GTX 460 is one of Nvidia's new series of graphics processors, much faster and more powerful than the GTX260. Prices should have come down on the GTX260,but it just makes the GTX460 even better to buy,and it's currently better for price/performance ratio than ATI's cards.|||GTX460 has pixel shader 5.0 and directx11

GTX260 has pixel shader 4.0 and directx 10

And runs on less watts .
